Medieval Villages

Medieval villages just a few kilometers from LeVersegge Resort. For example, Massa Marittima is a large medieval town of inestimable architectural value. Interestingly, the bulk of its most prominent buildings, are far more important than the actual size of the city walls. The cathedral, set at the top of an irregular square, confounds the viewer with the formal perfection and astonishing quality of its marble and friezes. Massa Marittima is actually an unborn city that, overwhelmed by the war with Cosimo de'Medici, saw its growing market and prosperity collapse.

But the Tuscan Maremma offers countless medieval villages that, from the Colline Metallifere to Amiata, open to the amazement of those who visit them for the first time. Pitigliano, with its characteristic tufa rock, Sorano and Sovana with their Etruscan origins, Manciano overlooking the entire Tyrrhenian coast, Magliano in Toscana, rich in its refined yet perfectly preserved walls.

But the smaller villages, those that frame LeVersegge Resort, are also worth a visit: Montepescali, the fourth municipality on the Peninsula to have its own statute, Sticciano high perched on a steep hill in the shape of Sugarloaf Mountain, Roccastrada, Sassofortino and Roccatederighi well characterized by its stone fortress. Monticiano is worth seeing along with that splendid Abbey of San Galgano and the nearby Hermitage of Montesiepi in which to admire the one true sword in the rock so much praised by King Arthur.

If you have the chance to experience your vacation at LeVersegge Resort you will experience our land with new eyes: you will discover that Maremma is to the Middle Ages as its wild nature is to the most untamed nature.
